Rip Torn The above is another excellent quote from the 2nd Ultravox! album. So true. So true. And it was the heading of yesterday's entry. How very lazy of me.
It's Friday, and it was raining cops and ducks, so of course traffic was complete and utter poopy. It took well over an hour to travel the 24 miles to work. I was supposed to be here at 6 to interview Mr. B. Real of Cypress Hill, but I didn't make it through the doors until 6:19. Then, of course, I couldn't find my sheet of questions that I'd lovingly (he means half-assedly) prepared days ago. I stomped around angrily for about 15 minutes and finally found them. I called him on his cellphone in a crappy mood, but by the time I was done and it was edited down, it sounded happy and friendly, and no one knew it wasn't live on the air.
I hate to be late to the party, but I always am. Both figuratively and literally. What I'm actually referring to is www.youtube.com I just said something in comments to my friend Ploppers about purposely ignoring trends/bands/etc. because they're popular, and how silly that can be, even if you're setting yourself up to be the ultimate hipster rebel like I seem to. In junior high I didn't listen to the 4th Led Zeppelin album coz everyone loved it. Ditto Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours". Eventually my sister gave me copies of both, and, uh, there's not a bad song on either. Now, repeat this trend constantly throughout a span of decades, and you've got a lot of good stuff discovered WAY LATE because I felt too cool for school at the time it was popular. When I'm bored at work I find that I can interest myself for hours on goddamn youtube. All you have to do is type in Match Game or Laugh-In and watch 70's clips of Charles Nelson Reilly or Alan Seuss.
Or type in Bloopers and watch gag reels of old Star Trek or Mash episodes. How cool that site is. Anyway, I know I'm fucking late to the party, but I'm a doofus and I'm admitting it. It's like an N.A. meeting. "My name is Johnny and I'm an addict." "HI JOHNNY" "Blow me".
Plop, you left me a note yesterday about the Ultravox songs. I didn't listen to the 30 second snippets that Amazon put up, so I don't know what parts of the songs you hear when you go there. It's funny to me how some people they have on staff TRY when putting up a sample, and select the catchy part or the chorus, and how other people obviously just pick the first thirty seconds, and sometimes all you get is a fucking quiet fade-in and 3 notes before it clocks out. The song "Distant Smile" starts off all ambient and shite and then turns into the same piledriver stuff that preceded it. The next one though is certainly Eno-influenced, yeah. They loved him before they worked with him and I'm sure having him around brought out Enoey feelings they never knew they had.
If you're a fan of Flaming Lips, there are lots of bands who've come down the pike in the last few years sounding suspiciously like them. Let's start out with just one of them. Starlight Mints.
What I mean to say here is:
In the next entry, which will probably be Monday, a band that sounds even closer to Flaming Lips. You'll shit a golden ticket. What?
Last night I watched an excellent episode of Nightmares and Dreamscapes, which is a bunch of Stephen King short stories made into li'l shows on the TV. "Battleground" was done just like the book, and it's so excellent. William Hurt is a contract killer. He kills a guy who runs a toy company, or a doll company, or summink. Soon after, he receives a package in the mail. It contains one of those old 60's/70's packages full of army men, tanks, etc. When it falls off the table onto the floor and the men disappear, and then tiny bullets start flying, the fun really starts. To have someone like William Hurt class up a story that some might find a bit low-brow was a great idea. He acts his aging ass off, and the really cool thing is (which I didn't notice for about a half hour)that no one talks throughout the episode. A really arty version of a pulpy horror story.
OH! If you're a fan of pure pop...I mean sweet yummy nummy pop music, like Beach Boys, Zombies, Posies, 10cc, etc., go to this site and sample a bit of their beautiful music.
Maybe start with Shorley Wall. Or whatever you want. You're gonna shit yourself, friend!
